Hamburger Bahnhof seeing sound, hearing time

Long before electronic music became what we know today, Ryuichi Sakamoto was already pushing its boundaries. The Japanese composer and artist was a co-founder of Yellow Magic Orchestra, a pioneering electronic music trio that experimented with synthesizers and digital production. His influence reaches far beyond electronic music, from film scores to experimental sound installations.

At Hamburger Bahnhof, seeing sound, hearing time brings seven works together across five large-scale installations, exploring the relationship between sound, image and our perception of time. Expect everything from an out-of-tune piano responding to earthquake data to immersive audiovisual works created with artists including Carsten Nicolai, better known in electronic music as Alva Noto.

A fascinating opportunity to discover the experimental side of an artist whose influence on electronic music continues to resonate.

Ryuichi Sakamoto ‘seeing sound, hearing time’ is on view until 20 June 2027 at Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin.
