Charli xcx just gave a masterclass in how making the world mad can be genius marketing. Recently, the singer landed the cover of British Vogue. During the interview she of course spoke about her current projects in film, but she also confirmed that her new album is ready to go and teased what we can expect from it. Her quote, “I think the dance floor is dead, so now we’re making rock music”, instantly went viral. Many artists within the dance scene were quick to criticise her, arguing that the dancefloor is very much alive.

Turns out the quote was intentional all along to introduce her newly released lead single ‘Rock Music’. The line everyone was debating? Yes, you guessed it, those are literally the lyrics of the chorus. And honestly, the dancefloor clearly isn’t dead, because the song heavily leans into a fusion of Charli’s signature electronic sound with rock influences.
